Gaidam Revokes Nguru-Machina Road Contract

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has revoked a contract for the construction of the 60-kilometre Nguru-Machina road, first awarded during the previous Administration of former Governor, Bukar Abba Ibrahim.

The Governor announced the revocation yesterday at the project site during his tour of ongoing and completed road projects across the state.

He expressed disappointment that despite huge resources expended on the road, the level of work attained so far has been ‘woefully disappointing’.

Gaidam said the road was initially awarded at the cost of N2 billion by the previous administration to A.K. Construction Ltd, but in 2007 when the current administration first came to power, the contract was reviewed to N2.4billion.

“Despite the review and our determination to ensure completion, the contractor continues to be slow and even inactive. More so, the quality of work leaves much to be desired,” he said.

The Governor asked the State Ministry of Works to establish contact with the contractor and open up discussion with a view to getting him pay back the balance of money paid by the government but for which no work was executed.

The Governor also explained his administration’s particular commitment to the road sector, saying the focus was to open up the state through various road projects in order to facilitate socio-economic activities.
